Pictures ar Worth a Thousand Words

This blog contains photos from my personal collection along from some noted photographers. The majority of my photos in this collection contain city life around the Washington, DC area.

Professional Photographers

These photos are taken by professional photographers. I chose one photo from each photographer and I critiqued each one. The phootgraphers pictures were all available from http://photographer.com

Tom Grissman:

I like this picture by Grissman. You can see the symmetry of all the riders. The riders and their horses stand out against the background. The use sepia draws the reader’s attention. The horses tail really shows capture my attention without drawing attention away from the riders.

.

Samantha Mastropolo:

The intensity of this picture is crazy. She looks like she staring at something unbelievable. The focus of her eyes makes you wonder what exactly is outside of that window. The subjects pink shirt draws the attention of view, but it does not overshadow the subjects face.

J.D. Small:

The subject is a tall building with many windows. The building looks like a giant mirror made with many little mirrors. The sky behind the building is very intense. It reminds me of my photo of the Verizon sign. The sky looks like it is fading from dark blue to light blue. This building also reflects another building that is beside it, that cast a shadow on the present building. The contrast of the building and the sky make this a good picture.

Bill Schwob:

To me this picture looks so unreal. I really love this picture. The green background makes the gold horns stand out. The way all the objects in photo are organized makes everything fit together. The light that is focused mainly on center on the photo made it intense. The sheet music also adds a good element in the photo.

Scott Baker:

The sunset light against this bridge highlights the midsection of the bridge. The light intensity of this photo is great. The bridge stands out but the background city is also brightened by the sunset. Since the photo is not straight on, the angle of the photo also makes this a good picture.

Conventional Camera!

These five pictures were taken on a conventional camera. A conventional camera are camera that use film. These photos were not edited. All of these photos are orginal.

Victory is Mine

This picture was taken with the coventional camera. This is a picture of a statue. This statue is in Freedom Plaza at Metro Center. The statue is a man on  a horse. Usually someone famous or went into an important battle is on the horse but I did not chechk for a explanation of the statue. I actually like thi picture a lot. To me, it looks like it could have been taken on  a digital camera. Since this was taken on a conventional camera I could not zoom in to capture more of the photo. This photo captures not only the statue but also an inviting background for the statue.

Down The Street

This photo shows down a street in downtown DC. I like it because it kind of reminds me of The Wizard of Oz in the sense that there is a brick road even if it is not yellow. I also like this photo because there are no people present which seem quite weird since this photo was taken inn downtown. The cityscape of this photo is really dispalyed with the presence of cars and tall building. I think that this photo came out pretty good on a conventional camera. If  I had taken this on  a digital camera i do not think I would change anything.

Whats Down The Road

This was a pretty good picture although you can hardly see what was down the road. I was trying to capture a cityscape picture which included the Capital all the way down the road. I really wish that the Capital did show. Although the Capital is no longer present in my photo, I still like it because it draws attention to the only person in the picture. If I were to edit this photo I would change the picture to black and white and zoom in a little closer to the person. The city looks amazing and the light in the photo is great.

On Top of the Building

This picture was entitle "On Top of the Building" because there was a Washington, DC flag on the top of the building. But since the picture was scanned you can not even see the tiny blob of the flag that was there. I still like this photo even if you can not see what my main focus point was. This picture is still a good one because you not only get to see a building from bottom to top in a landscape form you can also so what is going on, on the ground.

Glowing City
This is my favorite picture taken on the coventional camera. This is a picture of the Wilson Building, the building where the DC council members and Mayor have officies. I really like how the sun shines in. I feel that since the Wilson Building is the political place for the DC Council memebers and you also can see the DC flag that this is a good representation of Washington as a city. This picture was take from Freemdom Plaza. I feel that if i was to edit this photo, i would either make it in black and white or make the building stand out more.

Digital Camera Pictures!

These pictures in this blog are five pictures of city life in the Washington, DC area. All of these pictures were taken with my digital camera. These are orginal photographs taken for this project. Each picture displays a title that will help views understand it better.

Flags
This photo is entitled Flags. The two objects in the photo are the American flag and the flag of Washington, DC. When I took this photo, we (me and my fellow group members) were walking from Gallery Place/Chinatown down around Metro Center. These flags caught my eye because the wind was blowing and the sun was shining so bright. At first I just wanted to take the picture of the DC flag but I felt that it would be better to capture the American flag in the picture also. I edited this picture by adjusting the brightness of the picture as a whole and then increasing the contrast between the flags and the background windows.

Landmark
As many people know the MCI center was changed to the Verizon Center not to long ago. The Verizon Center is the heart of Gallery Place/Chinatown. This sign can be seen on Georgia Ave, above the McDonalds. It is home to many concerts and sporting events. I really like this photo because the Verizon Center sign stands out against the blue sky. The American flag is also beside the sign. When I edited my photo, I changed the contrast so the sky color seems to be fading from a medium blue into a lighter blue.

A City Built on Words

This quote is located in Freedom Plaza. It says "Washington...enormous spaces, hundreds of miles of asphalte, a charming climate and the most entertaining society in America." The quote was said to be written by Henry James in 1882. I find the place where I found this quote very interesting. Freedom Plaza also has quotes from Mark Twain and other influential people. I took this picture at an angle so I could fit all the words into the picture. Also I liked how the sun hit the quote just right giving it that spark. When I edited the photo, I adjusted the exposure of light to make the light shine brighter.

All Aboard!
This is one of my top five favorite pictures out of all the pictures I took. This was one of those orange and green tour buses that people generally find downtown. I thought this would be a good picture because it was just sitting there. It was also a picture in the moment because there was traffic speeding down this street. I changed the colors to black and white because it has that antique feel to me. Although a Subway advertisement is on the side of the bus, I feel that this picture can be mistaken for a 1950s type bus.

Bright Lights
The Majestic 20 is the movie theater located in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland. Its bright lights and spaces caused it to become the place to be on the weekends. This picture was quite difficult to take because of all the people and also because of the flash of my camera. I edited this photo by lightening the photo exposure than the light contrast was darkened to emphasize the lights of the theater. Not only does this photo emphasize the lights of the theather but all the lights surrounding the area shown in the photo.
